During this process, heat balance is a key factor that determines the development of these two underlying effects. Solidification, representing the next process step, involves a liquid/solid phase change, followed by thermal contraction during further cooling, which both result in volume shrinkage. Casting is performed by pouring a superheated molten metal into a molded cavity of the desired geometry.
